Being addicted to a substance that harms your body and potentially other people is a serious problem. Millions of people in the United States are addicted to drugs and alcohol and the problem of addiction is growing.

How does one get addicted? Quite simply someone tries a harmful substance, they like the effects, they use it again and again until the body feels a need to have it as much as possible. The person then has to resort to all sorts of ways and means to continue getting the substance, many times resulting to stealing and other illegal activities.

So what should you do if you suspect someone you love to be getting into the problem of drug addiction? Here are some tips · Confront the problem as quickly as possible. Drug and/or alcohol addiction is serious enough to warrant prompt action.

  • You may be unsure as to the extent of the drug addiction problem. Ask questions in a concerned way instead of an accusatory manner.
  • Talk with the problem with a professional to see how you should help the person with the drug or alcohol addiction.
  • Learn as much as you can about the problem. Look to see what kind of helps are available on the internet and in your community.
  • Understand that you may be angry about the problem. But show your love and support to the person as you help them deal with their addiction.
  • Know that addictions do not simply go away. It takes a lot of time and effort to help someone break an addiction.
  • Remind the loved one and yourself that you are not alone. As mentioned above, millions of people struggle with drug or alcohol addiction.
  • Perhaps be ready to let go and help the person get total outside help.
  • Celebrate happy times as well as any successes that come from meeting goals that help in breaking the addiction.
  • Try not to protect the person in an addiction from outside responsibilities. Do not make excuses for them. They need to understand the consequences that result from addiction.
  • Listen to the person with the addiction. Let them give you their feelings and thoughts for helping break their own addiction.
  • Never give up on the person. Even if you have to refer them to outside help, make sure they know they have your support and love.

Again, drug and/or alcohol addictions are serious problems with serious, sometimes deadly consequences. Do everything in your power to get help. The sooner the addiction can be broken, the better for everyone involved. Foster a safe environment around you to help keep drugs and alcohol away so addiction can never be a problem again.
